Every one of us, at some
time in our lives, will experience some form of trauma.
Hopefully, although these
episodes are painful and distressing, we will be able to cope with them without
these experiences causing us lasting damage.
Occasionally, however, we
may encounter a trauma so great that feelings of intense fear, terror and
helplessness occur, and as a result we may develop 'Post Traumatic Stress
Disorder'.
Post Traumatic Stress
Disorder is defined as an illness or disorder which is triggered by an
emotionally distressing event which is outside the range of normal human
experience.
Post Traumatic Stress is no
respecter of age, sex or culture, and can, given specific circumstances, affect
anyone at any time.
In some cases the effects of
the disorder may last for years and be devastating to both those who suffer and
to their families.
Assist recognises that many
individuals and their families/carers may need support as they struggle to come
to terms with the effect that P.T.S.D has on their lives and the lives of their
loved ones.
